LOS ANGELES -- Cliff Lee gave the Dodgers a good lesson in what has made him a dominant pitcher: masterful control. Lee scattered four hits over eight innings, struck out 10 and retired 21 of his last 22 batters to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-0 victory. The 2008 AL Cy Young Award winner has 38 strikeouts and two walks through his first five starts, after leading the majors in strikeout to-walk ratio and fewest walks per nine innings during each of the previous two seasons. "Thats definitely something I take pride in," Lee said. "I really focus a lot on working ahead in the count and trying to make them earn their way on base. Ive made a conscious effort over the past few years to make that one of my priorities and its going to continue to be that way." It was the fifth time Lee has had at least 10 Ks against the Dodgers and, this time, a number of their hitters were griping about umpire Hunter Wendelstedts strike zone. "Its a good thing for me when theyre complaining about called strikes. I dont see how that can be a bad thing for me," Lee said. "I know they did complain a lot on a lot of called, and thats fine with me." Carlos Ruiz hit a two-run homer and a two-run double and Ryan Howard also went deep in the opener of a four-game series against the defending NL West champions. Lee (3-2) had at least one strikeout in every inning he pitched and did not walk a batter, giving way to Jeff Manship after 113 pitches. Left-hander Paul Maholm (0-2) gave up five runs and eight hits over five innings and committed a throwing error in the fifth that gave the Phillies an unearned run. "It was frustrating just going through a long first inning, battling, not having your stuff, and doing everything possible to get deep into the game," Maholm said. "The bullpen needed a rest and unfortunately I didnt give it to them." Maholm used 29 of his 107 pitches to get out of the first after a leadoff walk to Tony Gwynn Jr. Jimmy Rollins followed with a bloop single to right-centre. Matt Kemp slowed up on the catchable ball when he saw right fielder Yasiel Puig coming hard. Both runners scored on Ruizs double into the right field corner. "That was huge. An early lead is definitely good for the pitcher," Lee said. Puig tried to get one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning, but ran into an out trying to score from second on an infield hit up the middle by Adrian Gonzalez that extended his hitting streak to 16 games. Second baseman Chase Utley fielded the ball behind the bag and looked straight at Puig, who ended up in a rundown. Catcher Ruiz took the throw and chased Puig back to third before making a lunging tag for the third out with Kemp on deck. "Thats definitely advanced. That just shows that hes one step ahead of the game and a prime example of what kind of player he is," Lee said. "Maybe he could have gotten the guy at first, but he had a pretty good idea of how Puig was going to be running the bases -- and he was dead-on. He was aggressively rounding third and he was going to go all the way home. But Chase anticipated that and got him out." The Dodgers got only one more hit over the next 6 2-3 innings -- a leadoff single in the second by Kemp, who entered 1 for 15 against Lee with nine strikeouts. Lee retired the next 20 batters before Tim Federowicz singled with two out in the eighth. The Phillies made it 5-0 with a three-run fifth. Howard hit his fifth of the season one pitch after a two-out walk to Ruiz. John Mayberry Jr. singled and scored when Maholm threw the ball over Gonzalezs head at first base after fielding a tapper to the right of the mound by Freddy Galvis. NOTES: The Dodgers dedicated their training room and named it in honour of Dr. Frank Jobe, the teams longtime physician who died March 6 at age 88. On hand for the pregame ceremony was Tommy John, whose career was extended 14 years by Jobe with the elbow ligament-replacement surgery he developed and has become commonplace in baseball. ... With the first chance to meet face to face, the gap suddenly didnt seem so wide on the ice. Brian Boyle scored his first goal of the season and captain Ryan Callahan added his first since returning from a broken thumb as the Rangers matched a season high in goals with a 5-1 victory over the Penguins on Wednesday night. "You dont focus on the other teams and where they are," said Henrik Lundqvist, who kept the Penguins at bay in a tough first period and finished with 28 saves. "We have to focus on ourselves. As long as we take care of our business, we are going to end up in good shape." Pittsburgh had won four straight and defeated New York eight times in nine meetings, but Ryan McDonagh and Derek Stepan scored 1:05 apart late in the first period to put the Rangers ahead. Boyle and Callahan connected within a 2:28 span of the second to send New York to its fourth win in five games. Derick Brassard made it 5-1 at 9:57 of the third, and Brad Richards had two assists for New York, which rebounded from a 2-1 loss to Anaheim on Monday and completed a 3-1 homestand. The Rangers quickly headed to a flight after the game for a meeting with the Blue Jackets in Columbus on Thursday. Kris Letangs power-play goal pulled the Penguins to 3-1 with 5:26 left in the second, but Callahans fourth of the season -- in his second game back in the lineup -- restored the Rangers three-goal lead 1:04 later. "We generated some good chances, but there is no guarantee when you do that," Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said. "We were generating, so I dont think there was a need to force things." Marc-Andre Fleury, who sat out Pittsburghs 3-0 win at Columbus on Saturday, stopped 20 shots. "We werent good," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. "We gave them opportunities. We didnt play at all at our game and then we got disjointed in our effort. We got disjointed in our game in the second. "That wasnt anything close to where we need to play or want to play." The Rangers (7-8) scored more than three goals for the second time this season but reached five for the second time in three games. New York has held opponents to two goals or fewer in eight straight games and nine of 10. The Penguins went 1 for 8 on the power play. "Everyone contributed right through the lineup," Callahan said. "That is what you need when yooure playing one of the top teams in the league.dddddddddddd Our penalty-kill was a big part of it. They have a strong power play. "Its a win that we can build on." Pittsburgh (11-5) fell to 4-3 on the road and allowed more than two goals for only the sixth time. New York led 2-0 when Richards found Boyle streaking down the middle of the Pittsburgh zone for a shot that got past Fleury with 6:50 remaining in the second. For the opening 18 minutes of the game, the Penguins had everything going their way. But despite controlling the puck and having multiple scoring chances, Pittsburgh remained locked in a scoreless tie. Then, in just more than a minute, the Rangers cashed in a pair and skated off with a stunning 2-0 lead. Boyle won a puck battle behind the net and backhanded a pass into the left circle that McDonagh gathered before snapping off a shot that beat Fleury with 1:52 left in the first for his third goal. The Madison Square Garden crowd was still buzzing when the Rangers quickly made something out of nothing for another goal. The puck came out of the Pittsburgh zone, and Mats Zuccarello forced a Penguins turnover at centre ice in front of the penalty boxes. Chris Kreider got the puck back to Zuccarello, who saw Stepan streaking into the Penguins end. Zuccarello flipped a pass back into the zone that Stepan chased down and deftly roofed in the net with 46.3 seconds left for his fourth goal. "It was more devastating because we gave them the opportunities," Bylsma said. "We gave them the second goal, gave them basically a breakaway with how we managed the puck in the neutral zone." The Penguins finished the first with a 12-9 edge in shots, including a drive by defenceman Matt Niskanen that was deflected by teammate Pascal Dupuis and through Lundqvist. The goalie desperately reached behind him as the puck fluttered and rolled toward the goal line, but it was swept out of harms way by Callahan with 6:32 left. About four minutes later, Craig Adams rang a shot off the right post behind Lundqvist. NOTES: C J.T. Miller returned to the Rangers lineup after being scratched against Anaheim.
