The highways sector has been undergoing rapid changes ever since the Central government, in a bid to overhaul its public services through the integration of technology, initiated a cluster initiative for highway modernisation. And these changes are being spearheaded by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) with Akhilesh Srivastava, the Chief General Manager (CGM) of its highway operations division, at the helm.


Some of the projects under the cluster initiative include Wayside Amenities (WSA), Electronic Toll Collection (ETC), Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), Drones and LiDARs for highway projects, and several others.


The introduction of ETC has been an important milestone for the nation. ETC, which is powered by RFID-encoded FASTag stickers, makes tax collection at Toll plazas highly organised and decongests the traffic at the gates. The FASTag-powered system has made the process transparent and easy. The NHAI CGM is currently working on ensuring at least one dedicated ETC lane at every Toll plaza.


Some of the other prospects of highway operations that the NHAI CGM is working to realise include geospatial technologies for monitoring of the ongoing projects and GPS tolling. A few other projects that have passed the pilot phase and are slowly entering the sector are: Drones for the real-time monitoring of ongoing projects, Road Assets Management System (RAMS), and Traffic Incident Management System (TIMS) or ATMS.


The Construction Industry Development Council (CIDC) recently awarded Akhilesh Srivastava the Vishwakarma Lifetime Achievement Award on March 07th, 2018, at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. NHAI CGM Srivastava was awarded for his contributions to the public sector, including e-Tender, e-MB, Wayside Amenities, and Electronic Toll Collection.


Taking India鈥檚 highway modernisation to the world, CGM Srivastava had attended the 4th Annual Roads & Highways at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel in Singapore. The event was held from April 09th 鈥?April 11th, 2018, and Mr Srivastava addressed on two distinct subjects 鈥?OBOR (One Belt One Road) and India鈥檚 highway modernisation.
